What kind of training do you have in pregnancy massage?
I have specialized training in prenatal massage, and uterus/ baby alignment from the Arvigo Institue and Spinning Babies, both of which have a heavy emphasis on traditional midwifery techniques, as well as, modern scientific understanding. I have over 20 years experience and training in multiple massage and exercise modalities, many of which I can apply to pregnancy, labor and postpartum massage. I have training in Breech massage to help baby turn and in Early labor massage to help prevent prolonged labor.
What kind of massage equipment do you use?
I have an orthopedic cushion that makes it possible to lay face down through most of your pregnancy and also makes laying on your side very comfortable. I also have a massage table that can be quickly adjusted into a variety of positions. View my equipment here: https://www.fertilehands.com/blog
How often should I receive massage?
A minimum of once per month/ every 4 weeks is recommended. Once you reach week 38 of your pregnancy, once per week is recommended to prepare you for labor.
What is unique about pregnancy massage with you?
Most massage therapists only use very light touch for pregnancy massage. I use deeper pressure (except for specific areas) and focus on your postural alignment to create long lasting relief. I also add new massage techniques to prepare you for labor, as your pregnancy progresses.
- Week 20: I can include belly massage and teach you how to do it daily to benefit baby’s position.
- Week 27: I include techniques that relax the pelvic floor and throughout the rest of your pregnancy.
- Breech / Week 34-40 : If your baby is breech, Midwives and Doctors will make you aware of it at around week 34. I offer massage to help make space for baby to turn and help you prevent a C-section. I combine Arigo Therapy and Spinning Babies techniques. These sessions can be done before and after an ECV/ external cephalic version. You can receive a weekly massage to help baby turn.
- Week 38-40+: Massage to stimulate (inducce) labor to begin on or near your due date is recommended beginning week 38 and getting weekly massages until labor begins. Weekly massage is recommended at this point.
- In Labor: I can go to your home, once labor begins and give you early labor massage to help you prevent prolonged early labor and to assist in helping labor go as smoothly as possible
Can I receive massage in the first trimester/ the first 12 weeks of pregnancy?
You don't have to wait until you are 12 weeks pregnant to receive massage. It's perfectly safe in the first trimester. About 80% of miscarriages occur by week 9 and it’s the reason it’s not usually recommended/ to prevent associating massage with miscarriage.
What can you do to help with miscarriage or stillbirth?
I can help you to manage physical pain after a miscarriage with natural herbs/ teas, massage and other therapies. The further along you were in your pregnancy, the more your treatments will be similar to the postpartum care protocol described below.
This is Miss Hortense Robinson, a traditional Midwife and mentor to Dr. Arvigo. Some of her techniques are included in my Pregnancy, Labor and Postpartum Massage. She is from a pre-Columbian lineage of midwives. Her mother and both her grandmothers were also midwives. They lived on the island of Cozumel, which was originally a sacred place where women pilgrimaged to ask for and to give thanks for their children. The island had a midwifery school, Men were not allowed to set foot on the land, and it was a refuge for widowed woman and orphaned children. Miss Hortense unintentionally began her midwifery practice at the age of 13. She was in a hospital waiting area for her asthma, and a laboring woman arrived, but there wasn't any staff, so she helped the woman deliver the baby. Miss Hortense also adopted 6 unwanted children she delivered, starting when she was 15 years old. Miss Hortense came to me in a dream while I was taking a class with Dr Arvigo and since then she's been someone I feel guides in my work.

I was one week past my due date. My Acupuncturist, Wendy of Lotus Center in Highland Park, recommended Rosa to help my labor get started. Rosa gave me Arvigo Therapy at 12 noon and my labor started that evening. My baby was born at 2:41am in the water in my living room (I had a home birth). This was my first birth and I think it was quick because of Rosa edit

I came to see Rosa when I was 38 weeks pregnant. My yoga teacher had referred me to her, saying that the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Therapy could get my baby in a "ready" position for birth. I was a bit skeptical, but I thought I'd give it a try.
Rosa was fantastic. She had a gentle and nurturing, yet firm touch. Since I was unfamiliar with Maya Therapy, Rosa guided me as to what it would do for my body or for the positioning of my baby. She had me feel how the baby was more to one side than the other between my hips. Then after a bit of therapy, I felt again and my baby had been centered. Later that day I went to yoga and by 9pm the next evening, my water broke. Based on the size of my belly, everyone had expected that I would be late, but here I was one week early and right after seeing Rosa! I wish I had been able to start sooner. Rosa has a real gift. I would highly recommend this for pregnant women."
